Nach Endprüfung der Installation wurden die Schutzschilder wieder geschlossen und der Transformator im Vakuum in Betrieb genommen.

It's not the "Vakuum", of course, that's got me, but the complete phraseology. Suggestions appreciated.

Explanation:
After final verification of the installation and the putting back of the protective plates, the transformator was started in vacuum.

that's more or less what I would put. Put I still feel it "smells" translation.
