potato shreds Explanation: Hi, I believe these are the main ingredient in Reibepfannkuchen (potato pancakes), sometimes also called Kartoffelpuffer. Potatoes are grated (on a 'Kartoffelreibe') into shreds and then combined with flour, onions, eggs, and salt and fried in a skillet. One of my favorites. Another possiblity is that these are potato flakes which can be used to make mashed potatoes (Kartoffelbrei). Cheerio, Dierk The Joy of cooking ISBN0684818701 |

grated potatoes Explanation: sounds likely to me since gerieben means grated. Here is a URL about packaging these things. The 2nd contains a reference to obtaining sweetening agents from Kartoffelreibsel. Now this should narrow it down, and grated potatoes would be probably what you would use in such an experiment instead of, e.g. potato chips or dried flakes.
