German term or phrase:Strumpfhöschen
Seems easy, but I've never seen them in England. They are tights that are cut off just above the knee and are worn to prevent chafing and apparently keep the legs cool. Does anyone know what we would call them? I've tried googling such things as 'above the knee tights', but all I find are rather heavy-looking leggings, whereas these are 30 den.
Thanks for any help.
Explanation: This question has certainly led to a lively discussion. I am now posting this as an answer on the basis of my discussion entry (please see the links there). I have left out the reference to "footless" as it is presumably obvious that tights of mid-thigh length will be footless.
However ... there are indeed German shopping sites selling items referred to as "Strumpfhöschen" and looking exactly like Nicole's pictures. Hopefully, the asker will confirm precisely what is meant in her case. These are often sold in the UK as "thigh-highs" (cf. knee-highs, ankle-highs)
@Astrid: Did you remove your entry? Pop stockings?

For linguistic reasons it would have been highly valuable to just leave it there. Just as my reply to my cherished colleague Trudy that just has been removed, because it wasn't sufficiently linguistic, but considered offensive. Interesting. :-)
All I can say is, yes it works. I've got some in demure cotton, but have also been wearing what we call "Radlerhosen" (i.e. the normal short tights) out of pure desperation. You can hardly wear pantyhose with sandals...
Again, just a description, as there doesn't seem to be a recognised term (yet). I did find this:
Footless Pantyhose by Demi-Hose - Footless pantyhose, capri-length and mid-thigh length, sheer and control, multiple sizes and colors available http://buyersindex.com/cgi-bin/texis/scripts/search?query=fo...
but the link to the site is unfortunately out of date.

This is the best, I think. My sincere thanks to all who contributed.
Reference information: I don't think they're sold in the UK, at least not for the same purpose (which is to prevent chafed thighs, I suppose).
Here's some that look similar but are sold for their control-top function instead: http://www.mytights.com/mytights/3988.html
The updates to the menu were made to make the site easy and more intuitive for visitors. Obviously, like any change, this may take a few days to get used to.
The dropdown menus have been divided into two-dimensional panels with similar items grouped together under headings. This eliminates scrolling for those with smaller screens, and also improves readability.
Mouseover your name at the top of the screen. Here you will find information about your account, your email settings, and more. The "My ProZ.com" menu was moved up here to simplify the main navigation, and to keep all of this type of information together.
