German term or phrase: Affenhaut

This appears to be some type of plastic foil, sometimes used to bind books. I can't seem to find the equivalent in English, any suggestions? I thought it might have been something like "moleskin," but can that be transparent?

"Den Karton hatte Udo, zum Schutz vor Verwitterung, in durchsichtige Affenhaut aus Plastik eingeschlagen, hinten verklebt; so wie man Bücher einbindet."
