German term or phrase: "Der Blick hakt sich an Details fest..."
I think I need a German native speaker to help me out with this one.

View from a balcony: Der Blick hakt sich an Details fest, um sich danach am Ganzen zu entspannen.

English translation:details catch the eye ...
Explanation:
First of all details catch the eye/capture the viewer's attention before he/she relaxes on seeing the whole picture/view.

I think this is the gist but a native German speaker may see something different.

neutral  Clarissa Hull: The eye lingers ON details (wrong preposition) before settling into calm contemplation of the whole. Yes, I may have lingered OVER things (i.e. temporal delaying tactics), but that's not what's wanted here at all, is it? Hence, ON. Look it up.
