German to English translations [PRO] Tourism & Travel
German term or phrase:Lusthaus
Sentence: Bereits 1570 ließ Kaiser Maximilian in Pertisau ein ***Lusthaus*** samt Pferdestallungen für seine zahlreichen Jagdgäste errichten.
I have found German definitions of course (e.g. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lusthaus) but I just cannot think of a neat English equivalent that does not sound "translated" or stilted. I would be very grateful for any ideas.
Explanation: It doesn't necessarily include the Lust element, but it would definitely be used for hunting, which seems to have been the main purpose of this building, and since it was clearly intended to host a large number of guests we perhaps need something which conveys the size better than hunting lodge or summer house
theres sth wrong with the links on wiki - on the German entry for Lusthaus the English link brings you to summer house as pointed out - but if you click on the Deutsch link on that page you get to Gartenhaus! As far I can see Lusthaus is not that different to Lustschloss, they just got bigger and grander. They were usually used for all kinds of entertainment not just hunting so hunting lodge might be too specific - even tho mentioned in the text. The retreat or residence idea seems the best one to go for, Or just leave it as Lusthaus.
Thaks Andrew, perhaps I'll put it in as an answer. It is definitely something quite grand, I have found it described as both a Jagschloss and Fürstenhaus.
country retreat would be excellent, or hunting lodge, although it doesn't transmit the size, or the idea of "Lust". I take this to be something rather large and pompous and rowdy.
@writeaway, the problem with "Summer house", is that they often went hunting in Winter, Fall and Spring, too.

Just found it listed as a jagdschloss, so hunting lodge or castle seem to be most common. What about country house, as the place the nobility went to hunt and shoot?
