German term or phrase: gebührender Abstand
This is from a newspaper article discussing high-speed rail transportation, and how it can be used to transport passengers when airports are outside of large cities. the sentence is:

"Neue Flughäfen lassen sich nur noch in gebührendem Abstand realisieren. Der von Kuala Lumpur liegt bereits 80 Kilometer von der malaysischen Hauptstadt entfernt."

Sentences before this talk about how airports were built years ago outside of the city, but that the cities are creeping nearer towards them, and how railways stations were once outside of the city gates, but are now in the middle of them.

The use of gebührend has thrown me here - can anyone help? It's the only occurrence of the word in this article.

thanks,

Joanne

appropriate
Explanation:
"Gebührend" here means something like "appropriate" or "fitting". It also has the sense of "sufficient" or "adequate".
"Abstand" refers not only to distance, but to the distance between two objects. One standardly talks about "Abstand" in connection with cars on the highway, i.e. that cars should keep sufficient distance from one another.
You could play around with the following ideas:
Appropriate distance
Appropriate intervals
Sufficiently far apart
Adequate separation

Sorry: Forgot the second part- "Distance", but perhaps a new formulation is better:
"New airports can only be built at appropriate distances from constantly expanding urban areas"... or something.

Essentially an inspirational guess, but it might work if they are talking about the broad picture rather than something specific.

neutral  Armorel Young: "compatible" is always a comparison between two things, involving one thing being able to coexist with another - I'm not sure what two things are being compared in your use of "compatible"

-> Being compared are the distances between areas of human occupancy and the location of the resp. transport facility. Too near, too far away, does it potentially stifle future development etc.
