German term or phrase: Richtung
Source: "A81 Richtung Stuttgart". (The text is a series of directions around Stuttgart intended for visitors from outside Germany.) I don't want to say "A81 to Stuttgart" as the non-German may think this road will take them directly to Stuttgart, which they don't want to do. "A81 in the direction of Stuttgart" seems a bit wordy. How about "A81 towards Stuttgart"? Any help appreciated. TIA, Orla.

Explanation:
Althoug you say it is a bit wordy it is the usual way of saying this. Towards is also OK but IMHO not so common.

Explanation:
"A 81 towards Stuttgard" is just fine, IMO.

But if you just said "A 81 to Stuttgart", wouldn't that also be OK? Surely the rest of the directions (or even the target address make it obvious you aren't actually going there? I think absolute minimum wordage is necessary here.

agree  BrigitteHilgner: Since I am trying (without much success) to teach my (adult) students the difference between "to" and "towards", I am very strongly in favour of "towards". :-)// Just don't ask!! ;-)

follow the A81 (Stuttgart)

Explanation:
Would be pretty clear, and is possibly as short as it gets...
If approaching the A81 from the A6 or the A42, for example, you'd surely turn south if you had that instruction...
