Der Hafen Duisburg zählt zu den bedeutendsten Binnenhäfen der Welt. Er ist Handels- und Verkehrsdrehscheibe der Rhein-Ruhr-Region und wichtiges Hinterland - Hub der ARA Seehäfen Amsterdam, Rotterdam und Antwerpen. Nahezu 20.000 Schiffe verschiedener Nationalitäten laufen „Duisport“ an, darunter „klassische“ Binnenschiffe (1.350 Tonnen Zuladung und mehr), „schwere“ **Sechser Schubverbände** (mit bis zu 18.000 Tonnen Zuladung) und etwa 2.000 seegängige Küstenmotorschiffe des sogenannten Short Sea Verkehrs (ca. 6.000 Tonnen Zuladung).

Integrated tug/barge units are used widely in the US Gulf and east coast offshore trade. The stern is notched to accept a special tug which can be rigidly connected to the barge, forming a single vessel.
The word barge evokes the image of a small, shallow draft unit with very limited carrying capacity that requires extensive shoreside equipment to be unloaded. That image is correct for the inland rivers and they offset the smallish carrying capacity of individual barges by combining 15-20 units into one tow.

Als Schubverband bezeichnet man die temporäre Kombination eines Schubschiffes mit einem oder mehreren Leichtern.
Grundsätzlich werden mehrere Leichter wie in einem Baukasten zu einem Schubverband zusammengestellt, der dann nur von einem Schubschiff angetrieben wird. Einen einzelnen Leichter bugsiert ein Hafenschubboot dann an seinen Bestimmungsort. Eine Zusammenstellung (4 bis 6 Leichter) ermöglicht neben der flexiblen Beladung auch die Einsparung von kostenintensiven Schubschiffen bzw. mehreren Schiffen mit eigenem Antrieb.

Siehe Referenz - dort nach Buchstabe S und "Schubverband" suchen. Das Schiffahrtslexikon ist zwar seit einiger Zeit vom Netz, lässt sich aber über das Archiv der "Wayback Machine" noch erreichen.
