German term or phrase: selbst vergeben
KONTEXT: "In größeren Firmen sind Produkt-IDs länger und werden teilweise selbst vergeben, teilweise von Vorsystemen maschinell übernommen."
I'm not sure how to translate 'selbst vergeben' in this context. I think it perhaps means that the IDs are partially assigned by employees. Just need help with the selbst vergeben bit. Danke! ;-)

Explanation:
I believe you'd call this 'assigned locally.' For example, independent US book publishers assign ISBN numbers locally by recording them in a ledger book they are given by the Library of Congress (well, that's the way it was when I worked as an editor. It's probably electric by now, but that's not the point). Large publishing houses often perform this task centrally, however. An exception might be a formerly independent publishing house that is acquired by a chain. While most ISBN's for the corporate group are assigned centrally (the equivalent of the Vorsystem above), in this case the newly acquired publishing house, since it already has an ISBN ledger, might be allowed to continue assigning numbers locally.
