Hi All,

I'm translating a text that contains a list of equipment to be found on a container vessel and some specs for that equipment. One of the items is a gangway ladder [the boarding gangway that is let down to the quay parallel to the ship's side], and its description includes the following:

"***Heißkantvorrichtung*** mit Davit und Elektrowinde"

No idea what the "heisskant" bit might be and no mention at all in the whole web or any specialised dictionaries I have access to, paper or online.

Any ideas? Ideally this should get finished this afternoon ...

By the way, the term "davit" normally refers to the device for lifting/lowering lifeboats on deck. In this case, it sounds like the gangway ladder is attached to this deck (or deck-mounted) hoist, which uses the davit-style design and is powered by an electrical winch. Thanks very much!! I guess linguistically for your explanation I would have thought Kantheissvorrichtung [the edge mounting positioning qualifying the hoisting device as a whole] -- it was that order that threw me! So in the end I never ended up thinking of heissen = hoisting. Rather, I was thinking of some heat-based manufacturing process!
