German term or phrase: Mitgängersteuerung
Context is operating manual for a vacuum slewing lifter for lifting and handling gas cylinders using suction. In the master data list, under "Type of control" = Mitgaengersteuerung. I am tempted just to say "operator controlled". The operator stands on the floor to operate and manipulate the machine and the gas cylinders. Does anyone know the correct technical term? Is it "pedestrian-controlled" or "pedestrian operator-controlled"?

pedestrian controlled
Explanation:
Pat, I think you are probably correct with "pedestrian-controlled". Benz/Wessel's Logistics Dictionary gives "pedestrian mode" for "Mitgängerbetrieb" when referring to "Stapler". i.e. fork-lift stackers, so logically we could assume "pedestrian-controlled" would fit the bill.

man-down / walkie

Explanation:
Forklifts and pallet trucks controlled by a person on foot are usually called "man down" or "walkie" vehicles.
Plenty of refs.

Had you searched for the root term "mitgänger", you would have found the answer under www.proz.com/kudoz/1285545
