German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / road traffic signals
German term or phrase: Pförtnerschaltung
Hi all
here we have a term from the world of highways engineering. There's an associated term "Pförtnerampel". I believe I'm in the realms of "approach-controlled" signalling here but not 100% sure.

Context:
"entsprechende Pförtnerschaltungen ... können abhängig von der lokalen Situation die Verlagerung (des Problems) ermöglichen"

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Explanation:
Must be a possibility; some of these beasts are after all controlled, and not automatic (don't we all hate THEM, when there's nobody else on the road?).

Hey - I got an even better suggestion: "gateway signalling". Maybe they would like that one? "Access metering" seems a real piece of incomprehensible jargon - blind the listener with "science", what?

Asker: Thanks David - in fact I could have noticed that these do/could form part of highly automated systems. The kind that detect buses and switch signals to green/red as appropriate BUT with e.g. environmental, air quality and NOx detector inputs plus heaven knows what else...

Asker: Thanks David, the correct term here for the client's context and house usage is "access metering". DanB.

Reference information:
"Pförtnerschaltung" is the term for a traffic signal that switches depending on the traffic situation BEHIND the signal. It's used for regulating traffic flowing onto highways without acceleration lane and the like. A "Pförtnerschaltung" switches to green if the traffic on the highway allows interweaving without the danger of accidents. Maybe a collegue knows of the appropriate english term (if it exists at all).
