German term or phrase: linearer Ansatz
'Eine Schalenelemente mit linearem Ansatz.'

Perhaps it could be translated as:

'A shell element with linear formation.' --to describe a structure.

on the basis of straight lines
Explanation:
Unter Vorbehalt: if it IS a locomotive body, this might be a good starting point.

And if it is a locomotive body, it should be described as "a body-shell designed (as far as possible) on the basis of straight lines". "A shell element" really sounds too "translated", and not at all natural.
