Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / Safety Instructions
German term or phrase: Schaltkeil
"Fahrzeuge an der Laderampe müssen mit einem Schaltkeil gesichert werden um ein wegrollen [sic.] des Fahrzeuges zu verhindern."

"Nach Beendigung des Ladevorgangs und vor dem Wegfahren hat sich der Fahrer zu überzeugen, dass der Keil an den Rädern entfernt wurde."

These two sentences above are from a German list of safety instructions that lorry drivers need to observe when arriving at the company's delivery and goods handling centre.

I have found only one Internet reference to "Schaltkeil", which refers to it in English as a "shift key". I cannot find any other English-language sites with the term "shift key". My other problem is whether the term "Keil" in the second sentence is a short-hand version of "Schaltkeil" or whether it simply means "wedge", i.e. the blocks that are put in front of a vehicle's wheels. There is no other mention of "Keils" of any sort in the rest of the document.

wedge

Explanation:
I think you are right. Schaltkeil means "wedge". Shiftkey doesn't make sense here.
The first sentence talks about placing a wedge to secure the vehicle from moving at the loading place (goods handling center).
The second sentence talks about after finishing loading, the driver should check (must be sure) that the wedge is removed before moving the vehicle.

Maybe even a piece of brick might do... :)
