German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / Transport/safety law
German term or phrase: Unterfeuerung
Context:

"Ist die Durchström-Menge der Überdruckventile der Tanks auf Unterfeuerung der Tanks ausgelegt und wenn ja, mit welcher Temperatursteigerungsrate?"

In a discussion of legislation governing the use of gaseous fuels (e.g. LNG) by ships (for inland shipping). I'm puzzled by other references to unterfeuerung (albei not necessarily reliable, e.g. http://www.linguee.com/english-german/search?sourceoverride=... ). As far as I can tell, this could either mean "under-firing the engine" or "having a fire under the LNG tank".

* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Minutes of a meeting
* Target audience: Ship operators/ bureaucrats
* Country and dialect (source): German (from a Dutch delegation, possibly already translated into German)
* Country and dialect (target): British English

fire engulfment
Explanation:
or full engulfment

Based on the following:

full engulfment [fire] - Unterfeuerung (m) [bei Behälterbränden der unterfeuerte Behälter ist vollständig in Flammen gehüllt oder Brandereignis, bei dem die in der Behältertasse angesammelte Flüssigkeit abbrennt] (page 176)
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=k6bd5tOD7QEC&pg=PA176&lpg...

The safety record of the lp gas industry is generally good, but it has been blighted by some serious incidents. The worst was the 1984 Mexico City disaster, when lpg tanks at a storage complex ruptured under fire engulfment conditions. There was considerable loss of life.
By mounding lpg tanks with an adequate layer of sand and earth, the possibility of fire engulfment and a BLEVE is removed.
Relief valves are not designed for fire engulfment conditions.

TP6 - To prevent the tank bursting in any event, including fire engulfment, it shall be provided with pressure-relief devices which are adequate in relation to the capacity of the tank and to the nature of the substance transported. The device shall also be compatible with the substance.

disagree  Teresa Reinhardt: this is a type of heating with a controlled rise in temps (see context)

-> Thanks, Teresa. I may have misunderstood the context as asker himself didn't offer much and seemed unsure. I certainly thought this was about safety during transportation, not a bottom-fired furnace in a refinery.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, but I am pretty certain that in the context of an LNG-powered ship the LNG tank is NOT likely to be bottom-fired or floor-fired, correct as that term may very well be in the context of crackers and cracking. Rather than posting a reference to another KudoZ answer in this way, you could, however, post the answer there as your answer here, then providing the link and credit to the other answerer in your explanation below.

-> so would you rather have someone pick the other answer? Esp. since someone vetted it... I have no idea how else to post this.
