German to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping
German term or phrase:radsatzselektiv
Context:
"Der pneumatische Gleitschutz sendet radsatzselektive Steuersignale an den elektrischen Gleitschutz."
I'm not certain if this shoulb be "specifically for each bogie"/"that are specific to each bogie" or the more literal "selectively for each bogie". That just sounds wrong, as does a similar translation in my TM (of an otherwise different sentence, albeit by a technically unversed translator) "on a selective wheelset basis".
* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Memo
* Target audience: Railway engineers
* Country and dialect (source): German
* Country and dialect (target): American English
Explanation: Radsatz = wheel set (UIC)
taken from my personal glossary, where I collected all railway-related terms standardized by the UIC "Lexique général des termes ferroviaires" (Raillexic) and used for translations.
Note: as former railway maintenance engineer (8 years) and planner (2 years) I am still familiar with railway technonolgy and terminology.
"Der pneumatische Gleitschutz sendet radsatzselektive Steuersignale an den elektrischen Gleitschutz." could be interpreted and rephrased as "Der pneumatische Gleitschutz sendet radsatzspezifische Signale an den elelektrischen Gleitschutz(regler)", or "Der pneumatische Gleitschutz sendet für jeden Radsatz eigene Signale an den elektrischen Gleitschutz(regler)".
Bombardier Transportation is enhancing its competence centre for bogies in Siegen with a new wheel set centre. The production of wheel sets on site ensures an optimised and simplified logistics chain, quality optimisations and a greater independence from external suppliers and changes in the market. In the first operating year, around 1,700 wheel sets will be produced and this should rise to 10,000 per year by 2013. http://www.lelezard.com/communique-690712.html

The complete phrase might be translated by "The pneumatic wheel slide protection device transmits wheel-set-specific signals to the electric slide protection control.
Allerdings stellt mein Kunde in diesem Fall "wheel-slip prevention systems" für Lokomotive her, also scheint das durchaus passend :-)
ist unüblich zu sagen. Siehe auch meine Referenzen. Hier finden sich nur "slip" (Schleudern, Druchdrehen) und "slide" (Gleiten).
Anti-skid wird bei Autos verwendet, oder bei Teppichen (im Sinne von rutschfest), nicht aber bei Eisenbahnen.
means "Schleuderschutz", not "Gleitschutz". "schleudern" means a wheel is running too fast for short moments, while "gleiten" means sliding without turning the wheel, e.g. during emergency braking (if not controlled by anti-slip control). I won't use "anti-skid" instead of "anti-slide".

This is about WSP. If you have doubts, read up about the subject
Firstly, in the US a "bogie" is called a "truck" (DE = Drehgestell); Secondly a "Radsatz" is a wheelset. Your text is clearly about wheelslip prevention or WSP devices, so the control signals must be directed towards specific wheelsets. The system must therefore be devised so that signals can be sent only to those wheelsets that need to receive them and not to all the wheelsets en bloc
the 'technically unversed translator' has got the terms for wheel set (Radsatz) and bogie (Drehgestell) correct ;-)
Maybe wheel-set specific control signals/commands would do?
