German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Transport / Transportation / Shipping / rail transport
German term or phrase: Triebzug
I am translating a call for bids for "Verbrennungstriebwagen", for which the Eurodicautom gives me the translation "internal combustion engined railcar", which led me to the assumption that "Triebwagen" would be adequately translated as "railcar". However, the more I have worked on this project the more insecure I get about the proper terminology, so I was wondering if there is anyone with experience in the area of rail transport.

In particular, the following terms are giving me a headache:
Triebwagen
Triebzug
Triebfahrzeug
I am wondering if there is any difference between the three. The author seems to use them synonymously throughout, but I could be wrong. The dictionaries and references I have consulted seem to indicate that there is a difference, in that "Triebwagen" is just one unit, and "Triebzug" would be a multiple-unit train. "Triebfahrzeug" seems to be the same as "Triebwagen", yet the translations I have found are different again...
Also, I am wondering if "Triebwagenzug" would be the same as "Triebzug" and "Triebwageneinheit" the same as "Triebwagen"???
And of course, for all of these, I am wondering what the appropriate English (British or American are both fine, but please indicate which it is) terminology would be for all of the above.

Thank you so much!

multiple unit train
Explanation:
Triebwagen would be motor coach, Triebzug would be multiple unit train, because the term used in Rail Transportation is EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) and DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit), so in the absence of the kind of power source, one would only use the term "multiple unit" instead.
Incidentally, I am an electrical engineer associated with Railway Technology since about a decade now!
