German term or phrase: Gatterwagen
There is not really any context available, and I understand that this word has several different meanings (one of them being a "saw carriage"). However, assuming that it means a type of vehicle, please could someone clarify what type of vehicle it is.

High-sided open wagon; saw-guide
Explanation:
These are two possibilities; the second is a frame for the guidance of saws in a sawmill - a "carriage" in the same sense that your typewriter has a "carriage"; the other one is a genuine railway goods wagon. It may also be used to describe the type of slat-sided lorry which is sometimes used for transporting cattle, sheep and pigs.

Thank you. Both answers were helpful, but this answer puts me slightly more in the picture about what a Gatterwagen is.

high-sided open wagon???

Explanation:
I have found the following definition of a Gatterwagen, for what it's worth!

"Offener Wagen mit hohen festen Seitenwänden (Gatterwagen), z. B. Ogw, Ogp"

Which would make it a high-sided open wagon (with fixed sides) (i.e. sides that do not slide or otherwise open)

Saw carriage is also found but you alone have the context to know what fits.....

PS I have long worked in a railway/transport environment and have never heard of this type of wagon before.....
