Le pieghe incrociate sono suddivisioni del foglio ottenute praticando delle piegature in sequenza ordinata perpendicolari fra loro. Alle pieghe originarie che trasformano un foglio steso in quarto dimezzandone generalmente il lato maggiore, segue una seconda piega, incrociata rispetto alla prima. In questo modo si ottengono le otto pagine in sequenza, dette appunto ottavo. Praticando la terza piega incrociata, dimezzando sempre il più lungo dei due lati, si ottiene il sedicesimo.
