Der mit Abstand grösste Verbraucher von Wasser ist die Landwirtschaft und zudem gleichzeitig auch einer der ineffizientesten Nutzer. 50% des vom Agrarsektor verwendeten Wassers geht verloren, hauptsächlich durch schlechte Leitungen, Infrastruktur und Verdunstung. Die Landwirtschaft wird immer noch überwiegend in Form von ***Regenfeldbau*** betrieben. 30 bis 40% der global produzierten Nahrungsmittel sind von künstlicher Bewässerung abhängig.
