Hochchinesisch (auch Mandarin genannt) ist die offiziell gesprochene Sprache in der Volksrepublik China, Republik China (Taiwan) und Singapur, und wird von über 880 Millionen Menschen auf dem Festland und auf Taiwan gesprochen. Sie ist damit die meistgesprochene Sprache der Welt. Dies ist zu einem großen Teil das Ergebnis von Anstrengungen sowohl der Regierung auf dem Festland als auch der Regierung in Taiwan, Hochchinesisch als Standardsprache des Chinesischen durchzusetzen.
