Se guardi la tabella di frutta e verdura a pag.3 del pdf che ho riportato nel link vedi che ogni gruppo a 3 cifre SITC include ed accorpa diversi tipi di frutta/verdura. Dunque funge da sigla o acronimo, ma per i numeri credo sia meglio gruppo, proprio come dicevi tu.
