I guess it is an serial (RS232) interface - on addition to the 2(3) wires used for communications (TXD, RXD, GND), several control signals are used at this interface (DSR, CSR, RTS, CTS, RI, etc.). Some of them are probably required in this particular application - DSR and CSR are the first required.
