German term or phrase: letzterer

Dieses Problem war Thema einer wichtigen Kontroverse zwischen Lipsius und Harnack und der Anfang der Laufbahn des letzteren. Auf Grund einer Untersuchung des Sprachgebrauchs des Irenaeus folgerte Lipsius, dass letzterer das Wort als zusammenfassenden Ausdruck vewendet habe.

Ich verstehe nicht, ob sich hier letzterer auch wirklich auf die zweite/ letzte Person bezieht, vor allem weil der Text so weiter geht:
(...) es genuegt, zustimmend auf Lipsius' Diskussion zu verweisen.

(dacă-s mai mulţi enumeraţi, anterior de a apărea -letzterer- atunci se traduce -ultimul - "ultimul"

Asker: Ich fand es nur seltsam, dass Lipsius zugestimmt wird, obwohl diese Kontroverse den Anfang von Harnacks Laufbahn darstellt, aber die zwei Tatsachen muessen ja nicht verbunden sein. Danke fuer Ihre Antworten.
