Me está costando encontrar una traducción que me convenza. ¿Bosque apropiado a su hábitat?
Gerade auch an den Terrassenrändern kommt das Buschwerk hoch und es sind ein, zwei Vegetationsgesellschaften - an feuchten Stellen ist es oftmals die Grünerle - und die überdecken alles mit ganz wenigen Arten, zwei, drei maximal, und dann braucht es sehr lange, bis die Büsche praktisch alt sind, dass sie absterben und dann eventuell der ***standortgemäße Wald*** vielleicht kommen kann.
lo que más me convence es tu solución de "apropiado". Yo optaría por algo así como "hasta que algún día pueda aparecer el bosque más apropiado para este ambiente".

Explanation: así lo llamaría yo. Pero tal vez la palabra autóctono es muy técnica para este tipo de texto.
