Diodo luminoso si la palabra aparece dentro de un contexto científico especializado (por ejemplo, un libro para estudiantes de Electrónica).
Si es por ejemplo, un manual de una cámara fotográfica, yo diría LED, pues "diodo" es una palabra muy especializada y no todo el mundo la conoce.
Pero como el alemán utiliza Leuchdiode, yo lo traduciría literalmente: diodo luminoso.
