Una traducción más libre...
Uno debe especializarse para luego adquirir un conocimiento multidisciplinar.
"Generalist" da la idea de un conocmiento poco profundo,dsiperso en distintas disciplinas, sin embargo, en español parece tener una connotación negativa, como cuando decimos "no generalices".
Otra opción simplemente.
