Tyskan har en skillnad mellan Getriebe = fast utväxling, t ex bakaxelväxel och Wechselgetriebe (Schaltgetriebe) som innebär att man kan byta växel (manuellt, automatiskt eller elektroniskt spoelar ingen roll). Svenskan har ju tyvärr inte den möjligheten, vilket är olyckligt. Växel är ju både Schaltung och Übersetzung. Växellåda betyder väl oftast att man kan skifta växel, men helt entydigt är det ju inte.
Det kanske kokar ner till:
Getriebe >> växel (med utväxling)
Wechselgetriebe >> växellåda (med växlingsmöjlighet)
