Moderna switchande apparater ger upphov till övertoner som är heltalsmultipler av grundfrekvensen 50 Hz. Här bortser man alltså från övertonerna. Den reaktiva effekten utför inget egentligt arbete, utan belastar elnätet så att det inte kan utnyttjas till fullo.
