Greek to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general)
Greek term or phrase:χόλιασμα
Context: routine maintenance in a hotel in Cyprus.
Under the heading ΟΙΚΟΔΟΜΙΚΑ, one of the items is:
δ. Έλεγχος W.C. (**χόλιασμα** και ευστάθεια).
The meaning here is not (I assume) the meaning I have found in dictionaries! There are a few Cypriot links for this word, but I have not been able to pinpoint the exact meaning.
Explanation: Aπό την ανάγνωση των κυπριακών sites για το χόλιασμα μου προκύπτει "αρμολόγηση", το γέμισμα των αρμών (joint) μεταξύ δομικών στοιχείων με κάποιο κατάλληλο υλικό.
How To Use Caulk
Caulk is great a material that can help you do it all. Aside from sealing cracks and filling in any gaps or joints you have inside or outside of your home, ... www.repair-home.com/how_to/caulk.htm

Thanks very much to both answerers! I don't think there's just one right answer here. Χόλιασμα seems to refer to a traditional technique, so "caulking" seems more likely than, say, sealing with silicon sealant. This answer has brought to my attention how much the word "caulking" is used in the context of building (previously I'd associated it with boats). 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Yes, that seems to be it: crack-filling. I'll leave this question open for a while. If anyone has any further comments, I'll be interested. (I'm not sure if a slightly more specialised term like "grouting" would be appropriate). I'm already using "filling" for στοκάρισμα in a previous part of the text (I suppose it could be "puttying" where appropriate).
Definitely, crack-filling (Από την εκκλησία αφαιρέθηκε ο επιπρόσθετος σουβάς και αποκαλύφθηκε η πέτρα στην οποία έγινε συντήρηση με τον παραδοσιακό τρόπο (χόλιασμα). http://www.simerini.com.cy/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=99675
Interesting find! My guess is it means crack-filling, and I wonder whether it comes from "hole". Cypriot Greek experts, please respond!

black grouting
Explanation: Not at all sure, but my wife, who is Cypriot, tells me that in her father's village in the old days they used to apply a black pigment called χολλά (Arabic word), derived, she thinks, from charcoal, to the eyelids of children to protect them from.....she's not sure what! Possibly infections of the eye. Certain tiles have a black or dark-grey grouting rather than a white one. Could it be that this is what is meant?

Notes to answerer
Asker: Very intriguing! I've found χολλά and χολλάν. Definitely soot - the sources I've seen say it comes from candles.
