Greek term or phrase: επικάθησε

One item in a list of work carried out on a ship's engine:

- Αποσύνδεση/επανασύνδεση της ελαιολεκάνης η οποία επικάθησε στην βάση της μηχανής.

... this oil sump which settled on the engine base/bed(plate)?

It just settled there by itself?

The verb επικάθησε seems odd here.

I think for sediment, etc., the verb is κατακαθίζω, not επικαθίζω. Here for επικάθησε you could just say 'sat'. I suggested 'was seated' to indicate that the sump was located at a specific site.

Asker: Could be, but I haven't seen the verb used in this way before. 'επικάθησε' makes me think of deposits, sediment and so on.

Asker: It should be επικάθισε, according to Babiniotis. Both verb and tense were puzzling me.

Aπ' ότι καταλαβαίνω η ελαιολεκάνη "επικάθησε" στη βάση της μηχανής και έπρεπε να την αποσυνδέσουν κ να την επανασυνδέσουν για να λυθεί το πρόβλμα; Tο settled μια χαρά μου φαίνεται. Αν την είχε τοποθετήσει κάποιος άλλος θα έλεγα was placed.

Both can be used for sediments dirt, cholesterol etc.

Επικάθιση is when sediment, dirt, cholesterol etc. "sits" on a surface wherever.

Κατακάθιση suggests a downward movement of the said sediment due to gravity and settling on the bottom of the container.

Asker: Το πλοίο επικάθισε - 'settled' or 'grounded'... 'Η ελαιολεκάνη επικάθισε' seems strange!
