Στο προαύλιο του Ελαιώνα ήταν ένα δέντρο με χονδρό κορμό που πάνω από τη γη ενάμιση μέτρο διχάλωνε.
Στάθηκα πίσω από τον κορμό του δέντρου που άκουα τις σφαίρες να το κτυπούν και ανάμεσα από τους δύο κλώνους με τα κιάλια έψαχνα να βρω τη φωλιά του πολυβόλου.
Σε κάποια στιγμή είδα μια κίνηση στην κορυφή του λόφου κάτω από τα δέντρα. Φώναξα ένα στρατιώτη μου να έρθει έρποντας να μου φέρει ένα πολυβόλο και δύο κιβώτια σφαίρες (στη διμοιρία μου είχα τρία γερμανικά πολυβόλα και δύο ατομικούς όλμους, φυσίγγια δε και βλήματα πάρα πολλά).
