Greek term or phrase:

soak (the soil etc) with their honourable blood

Explanation:
Just another possible option. Soaking soil with water prior to planting is seen as a positive thing, and I think ποτίσουν conveys the same message.
However, "shed" and "spill" are, indeed, the words most associated with blood.

Reference: shed their honourable blood

Reference information:
Both "shed blood/bloodshed" and "spill blood" have an established usage and according to the Collins Dictionary ,
shed blood : to kill people by violence or war,
whereas , spill blood : kill or wound especially with a knife or sword; a literary use.
For some reason," shed" is the one I would agree on, and although "noble" is understandable, I think "honourable" is preferrable in this case.
