Mike: OK! I want to make sure I get all the points because we don't have much time. Let's jump on a bit. Sorry to stop you. I heard Barba Yiannis talk about the differences between Australians, New Zealanders and the British soldiers because the only time he can have met them is in this period, in these days, not later. I don't think there were so many later. So, he met British, he met Australians, he met New Zealanders. Tell me about his feelings about these men. In what way were they different. Were they different?
Barba Yiannis: Μα πως? Αφού ήταν ένα αλαλούμ εδώ οι άνθρωποι. Ο ένας μετά από τον άλλον πεινασμένοι, πεινασμένοι. Εδώ ερχότανε και κάνανε πλακόφτες. Έβαναν νερό και αλεύρι και κάνανε πλακόφτες και τρώγανε. Είχανε λυσσιάξει στην πείνα γιατί εδώ μείνανε 3-4 μέρες. Μετά που τους καταλάβανε οι Γερμανοί μέχρι να φύγουνε περάσανε 3 με 4 μέρες για να τους διώξουνε στην Σούδα να τους πάνε στην Γερμανία από κει.
Καλημέρα... Πως θα μπορούσε να αποδοθεί αυτό;;;;

Ως ιδιωματική έκφραση το "αλαλούμ από κόσμο", "ένα αλαλούμ άνθρωποι" κλπ της τοπικής διαλέκτου, (Αποκόρωνας), ενδέχεται να σημαίνει και κάτι άλλο - την διαφορετικότητα των ανθρώπων σε επίπεδο εθνικό, κοινωνικό, κλπ. Και έτσι φαίνεται να είναι και στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση. Ρωτάει ο Mike : Πες μου πως ένιωθες για εκείνους τους άντρες. (εννοεί τους Άγγλους, Νεοζηλανδούς, Αυστραλούς)

Η απάντηση λοιπόν είναι πάνω σε αυτό-το αν ήταν διαφορετικοί και με ποιο τρόπο- και βέβαια απαντάει λέγοντας οτι"ήταν λογιώ-λογιώ άνθρωποι", ή αλλιώς "ήταν ένα αλαλούμ οι άνθρωποι". Άρα θα πρέπει να αποδοθεί - ο Phil Lees θα μπορούσε να μας βοηθήσει- με κάτι σαν "there were all sorts of people there"
