Hebrew term or phrase: נתיבות עולם
Hi,

There's a line in this Naomi Shemer song which puzzles me:

לשוא שאלתי לנתיבות עולם

Apologies, but I can't find it on the Web (perhaps you might manage where I failed, however – I'd love to know if there's a site with Naomi Shemer songs); however, the context is one of a woman who has loved and lost.

Literally “in vain I asked about the ways of the world”, perhaps: however, what exactly is meant by the ways of the world? Ways of coping with things, perhaps? Like finding a new lover, in this case? But is it limited to wise ways? Would turning to drink also count as a נתיב עולם? Most likely I haven't even began to understand…

All the best,

Simon

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi, Many thanks. So, finding a new lover would be a netivat olam but turning to drink wouldn't be one. Do you agree? Best, Simon
