Hebrew term or phrase: Hevrah Kadisha
In Makó, the Pulitzers prospered, benefiting from the town’s growth
into an important provincial market center. Joseph’s great-grandfather
Baruch Simon Pulitzer, the earliest known ancestor in Makó, sold rawhide
and later grain. Unusually for Jews at that time, he owned his own
house, and he was one of the leaders of the Hevrah Kadisha, which
helped arrange burials in Jewish congregations.
