Hindi term or phrase: मूसहर (?)
Hi,

I recently watched a programme about some very humble people in the countryside who sometimes actually ate rats. Is the right word for them मूसहर, please? If so, what does the “ahar” mean? I can’t find a root like that meaning “eat” – perhaps it’s just “har”, meaning “take, seize, take away”. I am really not sure about the exact translation.

I seem to have been confusing it with मुसहर, which actually seems to have to do with medicinal herbs collected in the forest rather than rats.

All the best,

Simon

English translation:मूषक आहार
Explanation:
It is the tadbhav form of मूषक आहार, i.e. those who eat rats (मूषक है आहार जिनका).

आहार = food, diet
मूषक = rat

Your confusion probably stems from the mixup between आहार and अहर. AFAIK, there's no such Hindi word as अहर.

Rat-eating Tribe

Explanation:
Mooshar is a tribe in the South of Nepal, and it is possibel there might be some more people of this tribe in the plains of North India, particularly Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
In Nepal they number just a few hundred, and they live near the Indian border. "Moosa" means "a rat" and "Ahar" means "food". As rightly put by Chandan Mishra, "Mosahar" means "those that eat rats"

मुसहर, Mus-har

Explanation:
You are right. The other term given by you i.e. मुसहर
is correct. I couldn't find the word मूसहर in any of the Hindi dictionaries. However, I could find the word मुसहर with the following meanings.

A person who lives by selling medicinal herbs collected from the forests.

(Oxford Hindi English Dictionary)

एक अन्तयज (निम्नवर्ण) जंगली जाति जो जंगल से लाकर जड़ी बूटी बेचते हैं।
(भार्गव आदर्श हिन्दी शब्दकोश)

एक जंगली (आदिवासी) जाति, जो दोने, पत्तलें आदि बनाने का काम करती है।

(बृहत् हिन्दी कोश, ज्ञानमण्डल लिमिटेड, वाराणसी)

I could also find its following meaning online in संदर्भ चिट्ठाजगत

Example sentence(s):
  • मुसहर हरे पत्तों से थाली और दोने तैयार करते थे।
  • मुसहर - चूहा, कछुआ पकड़ने, खाने वाला. धानुख - रस्सी बट्ने वाला. बरई - पनहेरी
