Hindi term or phrase: वादिना
Greetings,

In R.S.McGregor's Oxford Hindi-English dictionary, the word combination वीणा-वादिना is glossed as "lute-player: a title of the goddess Sarasvatī as patron of the arts."

However, I was unable to find the word वादिना on its own. Is it not the usual word for "player" (of an instrument)? I suppose वैणिका would be thought of as more Sanskrit than Hindi...

Best wishes,

Simon

वादिना is a correct word, but not in this context

Explanation:
I too have R.S.McGregor's Oxford Hindi-English dictionary (1993 Edition) and I find that under the entry वीणा, the sub-entry "-- वीणा-वादिनी, f. lute-player: a title of the goddess Sarasvatī as patron of the arts." has been given and वीणा-वादिनी is correctly printed there (page 933), However, the flute-player has been misprinted as "f. lute-player".

वीणा-वादिनी is also known as सरस्वती देवी (Saraswati Devi).

The word "वादिना" has different meaning as under:

सत्य वादिना wikisource.org/wiki/बालकाण्डे_अष्टपञ्चाशः_सर्गः_॥१-...

तथा अपि सूतेन सुयुक्त वादिना । wikisource.org/wiki/अयोध्याकाण्डे_षष्ठितमः_सर्गः_॥

शृणु गाथाम् पुरा गीताम् धर्मिष्ठाम् सत्य वादिना

I withdraw the undernoted comments given by me above:

However, the flute-player has been misprinted as "f. lute-player".

Example sentence(s):
  • सिद्धस्य असिद्धस्यापि साधनत्वेनाभिमतस्य, स्वयं वादिना
  • ततश्चयदपि स्वयमिति वादिना यस्तदा साधनमाह।

agree  alka kumar: Rawal ji, while i agree with your explanation, i would like to point out that lute is not flute. Lute is veena and flute is baansuri. f.lute player means female veena player

-> Thank you very much Alka ji. I am really greatful to you for bringing out the lapse on my part. I too was wondering about this because I knew that f. means feminine gender. I was preoccupied with some urgent work and just failed to do further research.

The Sanskrit term for a male speaker is WADIN, and its feminine ought be WADINA. Also Sanskrit WADI means "Skilled" and the feminine of WADI too is can be WADINA
