Hungarian term or phrase: középmezőny
Átvitt értelemben:
"Magyarország a középmezőnyben helyezkedik el a 12-15%-os részesedésével"
De érdekelne az eredeti (sportban használt) jelentése is.

middle-rank
Explanation:
Szerintem mindkét vonatkozásban a middle-rank a leggyakoribb kifejezés angolul a középmezőnyre. Középmezőny beli pedig middle-ranking. Néha elhagyják a kötőjelet.
"...a survey among the middle ranks of political parties carried out throughout Europe"
"the financial performance of middle-ranking football clubs"
Ennél is gyakoribb azonban, hogy nemes egyszerűséggel csak a "middle" szót használják (be/rank/place stb.) first - in the middle - last.

middle ground

Explanation:
Az EurLex-ben találtam ezt:
A Cseh Köztársaság, Litvánia és Lengyelország a hektáronkénti 32, 33, illetve 41 EUR-ral a középmezőnyben volt[7].
The Czech Republic, Lithuania and Poland held the middle ground with, respectively, €32, €33 and €41 per hectare[7].

A futballban, amikor azt akarják kifejezni, hogy egy csapat a középmezőnyhöz tartozik, általában azt mondják, hogy "middle of the table", tehát a tabella közepén helyezkedik el.

neutral  Ildiko Santana: Nekem a "middle ground" a magyar "középutas" kifejezést juttatja elsőre eszembe.
