Hungarian term or phrase:kilóg a szőrös lóláb
Van bizonyos elképzelésem, de még nem kristályosodott ki, hogy mit is írnék. A "kilóg a lóláb" két helyen is előfordul a cikkben, de, hogy ne legyen olyan egyszerű a dolog, az egyik helyen még jelzővel is kiegészítették azt a bizonyos lólábat. Itt van a két, tipikusan "magyaros hosszúságú" mondat, ahol előfordul. Annyiból jó ez, hogy elég bő a szövegkörnyezet és tudni lehet, hogy mit ért a szerző a keresett kifejezés alatt.
...Ha az elmúlt két hónap eseményeit logikus lebontásban nézzük, figyelembe véve, hogy az Egyesült Államok emberjogi érdekeket fitogtatva minden erejét latba vetette annak érdekében, hogy állítólag Líbia polgári lakosságának védelmére jóváhagyassa az ENSz Biztonsági Tanácsában a repülési tilalmi zónát Kadhafi országa felett, észrevehetően kilóg a lóláb az USA politikai megnyilvánulásaiban, mivel mind a mai napig hasonló kísérletet nem tett Szíria esetében, ahol a kormány csapatai legalább háromszor annyi személy életét oltották ki mint a Kadhafit támogató fegyveresek Líbiában, sőt Obama embere most biztosította az USA kormányának támogatásáról a szaúd-arábiai uralkodót, miután az csapatokat küldött a Bahreinben demokratikus reformokat követelő tüntetők leverésére, és egy árva szóval sem tiltakozott a már három napja tartó bombázás és ágyúzás ellen, amely a nem éppen arab-barátnak nevezhető izraeli légierőknek és tűzérségnek köszönhetően folyamatossá vált a Gázai övezetben lévő polgári és katonai célpontok ellen, aminek megállítására az Arab Államok Ligája ugyanolyan repülési tilalmi zóna létrehozását kéri a Biztonsági Tanácstól a Gázai övezet felett, mint Líbiában. Igen, Obama úr, tisztelt Nobel-békedíjas; a szőrös lóláb olyannyira kilóg, hogy fel kell Önt terjesztenünk a Képmutatás Világdíjára, ugyanakkor felkérni a Nobel-Bizottságot arra, hogy fossza meg Önt a meg nem érdemelt Nobel-békedíjtól, hiszen, ahogy mi látjuk, Önt leginkább csak egyféle arab érdekli, a halott arab, és az, hogy minél kevesebben maradjanak, mert annál könnyebben hozzá tud férni az olajukhoz....
Explanation: Ez ugyan régies kifejezés, de a magyar szólás is nagyon régi.

Still interesting, because the Hungarian term is widely used today, however its meaning is not always the same - there is room for interpretation. In the given context the term stands for the symbolic representation of failed deception, not just simple lying. And this is the strongest message. From the recommended answers I find this one to be closest to a usable term, but it is still weaker than the Hungarian, because the emphasizer part (szőrös) is missing. 3 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Here’s the definition of the word “régies” from the Hungarian dictionary of definitions, the Értelmező szótár:
régies - amelyet még mindenki megért, de már csak kevesen használnak”, for ex. “régies kifejezés” – meaning “archaic”, “old-fashioned” in En.
“Régi” on the other hand means “a távoli múltból származó, a mostanit megelőző, előbbi, korábbi, hosszú idő óta ismert, megszokott” etc. You can easily look up all the meanings, there are too many to enumerate here.
I agree that this idiom sounds archaic in English, that’s exactly what I said in my answer. However, I believe this is the closest EN equivalent to the “kilóg a lóláb”, which is also a very old idiom, but it is still being used in Hungarian, so it doesn’t sound obsolete.
I am fully confident that the asker can decide which translation serves his purposes the best.

Explanation: Először a "stick/stand out a mile" vagy a "stick/stand out like a sore thumb" ötlött fel nekem, de sajnos nincs konkrétumunk, csak utalás arra, hogy a politikájukat valójában a nyíltan hirdetettel ellentétes, mögöttes indíttatások motiválják, és ezt a valódi, bár be nem vallott politikát már mindenki jól látja. Így arra gondolok, talán az elefántos hasonlattal lehetne élni: "the elephant in the room". A második említésnél pedig: "Yes, that hairy elephant is so huge that we should nominate you, Mr. President Obama, for the Hypocrisy Prize". (Az elefánt is szőrös, akárcsak a lóláb. :)
Angol értelmezése: "The elephant in the room: An important and obvious topic, which everyone present is aware of, but which isn't discussed, as such discussion is considered to be uncomfortable."
Másik ötletem a macskás hasonlat, talán kevésbé találó, de ez is egy lehetőség. To reveal a secret: to let the cat out of the bag. A sercet discovered: the cat is out of the bag / that furry cat is out of the bag. (A macseknak is van szőre, akárcsak a lólábnak vagy az elefántnak. :)
