Hi,

I'm really not sure what's going on here - some old Icelandic tradition or something? Special names adopted by dancers? Intriguing!

All the best,

Simon

104:19 María sá vel hvað henni leið. Hún beið þess með óþreyju,
104:20 að Jón dansaði við hana. Loks kom röðin að henni í
104:21 "nafnakalli". Það var alltaf siður, að Jón héti tilkomumesta
104:22 nafninu. Það var nefnt eftir fornaldarhetjum. María
104:23 átti að nefna. Hún nefndi sjálfa sig Jökul. Það myndi
104:24 honum líka verða gefið. Og það varð. Þau fóru út á gólfið.

the calling of names
Explanation:
This must be a game of some sort, possibly to make sure everyone will not dance all the dances with the same person. Since so little detail is given I can only assume that the author expected the readers to know the game.

The dictionary meaning of "nafnakall" is "the calling of names" as in a vote or head count.

(I'll check a reference book I have at home when I get off from work.)
