Explanation:

Yang dimaksud orang dengan ayam buras adalah ayam keturunan lokal, lawan dari ayam negeri, yang, walaupun namanya seperti berasal dari dalam negeri, merupakan keturunan ayam yang diimpor. Kata buras adalah singkatan dari bukan ras [ayam negeri]. Ayam buras disebut juga dengan ayam kampung.

Ciri khas ayam negeri adalah bulunya tebal, menandakan adaptasi terhadap cuaca dingin. Tidak demikian halnya dengan ayam buras. Dulu, ayam buras memang dipelihara secara dibiarkan (free range), namun sekarang sudah banyak yang mengikuti metode peternakan modern.

Istilah ayam kampung bermakna kurang jelas, dan hal ini mempengaruhi terjemahan Inggrisnya. Kalau maksudnya adalah ayam yang dipelihara di kampung secara bebas, maka sama dengan free range chidken. Tetapi kalau hanya dilihat dari keturunannya, maka searti dengan buras, yaitu bukan dari ras yang diimpor, seperti Leghorn. Istilah ayam buras jelas menegaskan keturunan, sehingga sebaiknya diterjemahkan indigenous chicken.

Explanation:
Ayam ras means that the chicken is of an imported breed. Imported, meaning that the breed is not originally from Indonesia, like the 'ayam kampung'.

Ayam buras (bukan ras) simply means that the chicken is not of the imported breed.

So I would translate ayam buras as domestic (breed) chicken.

An ayam buras could be a free range chicken or it could also be raised commercially in coops.

Free range chicken means chicken not housed in a chicken coop and are given the freedom to pick and peck outside, in their home range. It may have a chicken coop to stay at night and to lay eggs. The owner of a free range chicken would usually have a chicken coop for practical reasons, ie. he would not have to hunt for the eggs in his yard, or to protect the chicken from predators.

So an "ayam ras" could also be a free range chicken if it doesn't have to live its life in a chicken coop.
