Indonesian to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Law: Contract(s) / mining contract
Indonesian term or phrase: perlengkapan dan fasilitas Kontraktor, dan peralatan
I realise that 'perlengkapan' and 'peralatan' are used fairly interchangeably to mean 'equipment'. However, the contract I am working on includes many iterations of 'perlengkapan dan fasilitas Kontraktor, dan peralatan' and I am at a loss to decide how best to deal with the references to both 'perlengkapan' and 'peralatan' in the same sentence, clearly with different intent.

Because the root of 'peralatan' is 'alat', meaning 'tool', I at first favoured using 'tools' for 'peralatan', but I also found references to 'peralatan' as supplies. However, there is also reference to having spare parts (suku cadang) for 'perlengkapan, fasilitas dan peralatan'.

Please suggest/explain what the difference would be on a mine site between 'perlengkapan' and 'peralatan' and how best to translate the phrase "perlengkapan dan fasilitas Kontraktor, dan peralatan".

Thanks for your help.

peralatan = equipment

Explanation:
I worked in a mining company for 2 years in late 90s, and I think they refer peralatan to heavy equipment, which is vital components in this industry. The more accurate term is 'alat berat' (heavy equipment). So I suppose, the perlengkapan are the smaller completeness/devices/tools including desks/tables/other office stuffs.

Well, in that case, I guess my suggestion simply does not apply. You should be able to figure out the most appropriate terms for those, I believe.

Notes to answerer
Asker: You have not provided your suggestion for the entire phrase, only one word.

Asker: Thank you for the detailed explanation of the terminology used in the industry. Unfortunately, the drafter of the contract I translated was apparently unfamiliar with industry terminology. Also, the contract listed trucks, graders and other heavy equipment under 'plant and equipment', so it confused matters even more! You are correct in saying that the more accurate term is 'alat berat', or 'alat-alat berat'.
