"volumi" sono gli spazi in cui è suddivisa un'automobile.
secondo lo schema classico, detto "berlina", abbiamo tre volumi, vale a dire il cofano motore all'anteriore, l'abitacolo al centro e il baule in coda.
Le "due volumi" sono le auto che non hanno un baule posteriore sporgente, come le attuali medie.
Le monovolume, come si intuisce, non hanno un cofano motore che si estende VISIVAMENTE al di fuori dell'abitacolo, nè un baule in coda. E' un corpo vettura che garantisce la migliore abitabilità in rapporto alla lunghezza della vettura.
Esistono poi delle varianti:
-Station Wagon: al posto del terzo volume (il baule) c'è un prolungamento dell'abitacolo, utile per caricare più bagagli rispetto a una classica tre volumi
-Fastback: è una tre volumi con il baule raccordato all'abitacolo da un lunotto lungo (ES la FIAT 127)
-Due volumi e mezzo: il baule posteriore sporge di poco rispetto all'abitacolo (ES. la BMW 316 Compact)
-Coupè: in francese significa "tagliato", auto basata su una berlina tre volumi, con l'abitacolo di lunghezza ridotta, adatto ad accogliere due persone e due bambini sui sedili posteriori (ES. Lancia k Coupè)
-Spider: italianizzazione di "Speeder", vettura due posti con tetto in tela
-Cabriolet: tre volumi con tetto in tela ripiegabile
