agree  Pompeo Lattanzi: "Abbeccedario" is in facta "first reader" (the name comes from ABC), but frankly I like better the less-than-literal "picture book". It has a nicer ring to it!

Explanation:
this, strictly speaking, is the translation of "abbecedario" and in perfectly normal use in English. No need to mention the child, everyone knows an A-B-C is a child's book.
