You could also use "university teaching hospital," although oftentimes, at least in the US, one understands that a "university hospital" is a "teaching hospital." This, by the way, indicates that doctors may have residents attending patients with them.

what I can tell you about this matter is that an Azienda ospedaliero universitaria is a sort of merging between two different structure: an hospital with highly specialized dept and a university hospital.
Of course in this structure work together normal hospital MD and university Professors, researchers, and MD attending medical specialization courses.

nor is it your common sense – no matter how good it may be: it's a rather technical matter and not a matter of "getting away with" this or that stylistic turn of phrase... (Hah, just was writing this and saw Enza's comment come in! But not preferable – obligatory). Try to follow what I'm saying: it's not whether they teach or not, but whether or not they have UNIVERSITY STATUS, damnation! It's a TECHNICAL matter pure&simple: University Hospitals have university status. Their permanent medical staff bear academic titles; they grant degrees, they are registed as academic institutions; and it's all in their statutes. A mere teaching hospital may be as closely associated with a university as a twin bro, yet without being part of the latter. There are teaching hospitals and there are university hospitals... and of course they teach. So, with the latter it's not "University" but "teaching" that's redundant. Okay guys, I ran out of steam and am rapidly turning into Greta Garbo...:)

As categorically as the non-Central-European Ear states her congratulatory agreement with Tom, ALL hospitals in Italy without exception and most in the US are teaching hospitals;but only a few of them are University Hospitals proper. Here, we are talking about the university status of the hospital – not its didactic functions and facilities, which are basically de riguer in every hospital worth the name.
