method of layering vines (used formerly in Champagn area) , and consisting of burrying the whole vine or a part o it in the soil, in order to increase the number of vines or to replace them.

The above is the most intelligible way I can come up with of translating this and it might be worth putting the actually meaning in a footnote imo.
