Italian term or phrase: Imprenditore Agricolo Professionale
I have a text that says that this "qualifica" of "imprenditore agricolo professionale" is an EU term, but I cannot find it in English. I'm starting to think the term is an Italian invention based on EU concepts. Can anyone help?
Here's the sentence: "...nel nostro ordinamento non esita una chiara definizione di coltivatore diretto e, tuttavia, essa permanga solida ed indiscussa e venga a tratti identificata ed a tratti distinta da quella di recente conio comunitario di Imprenditore Agricolo Professionale ( IAP ), evolutasi per mutazione dalla precedente di Imprenditore Agricolo a Titolo Principale ( IATP )".

  -> That was also my impression. However as the asker says, this is probably not a "standard EU term", just a translation of a very Italian term. Also we have the problem of translating other similar terms, also Italian in origin, that are used with it.

these eur-lex documents are, to the best of my knowledge, official EU translations, hence presumably 'professional farmer' is an official English term

neutral  James (Jim) Davis: While I would tend to agree with this rather than the literal translation offered, it is difficult to see this term applying to a grower of grapes and olives, which the Italian original would.

agree  potra: Yes, the IAP is a person whose main activity is agriculture and farming and is therefore entitled to all insurance and tax benefits of this category. Usually one would specify the type of crop/crops being cultivated, harvested and/or sold.
