Italian to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Agriculture /
Italian term or phrase:allettamento
Hi, this term refers to a negative effect of excessive seed planting on crops. It means that the crops bend over under adverse weather conditions until touching the ground. I cannot find an English equivalent. It is not bedding (as in construction), perhaps bending?
TIA and have a good one.
Explanation: You made need to change the wording but "allettare" means "beating down" according to garzantilinguistica which gives this example: il vento ha allettato il grano, the wind has beaten down (o laid o lodged) the wheat
for the order and time of answer submission, including full explanations. I also see mutual agreement here, so I;ll try to be fair. Thanks for all the help, which, beyond points, is much appreciated.
Should not the part of speech in the source correspond to that of the target. In this case the glossary will give an adjective "lodged" as the meaning for a noun "allettamento". "Lodging" was offered by colleague Umberto Cassano, and also included the explanation for my own suggestion "beating down".

Explanation: A useful resource to check out may be the IATE, yet I'm well aware that peers are prone to sneer at the IATE or take its glossaries with a pinch of salt.

Thanks, Vincent. You're too kind, surely. Let's say that I've done a number of agriculture-related translations and, as I've already mentioned, I've got some good reference books in my library.
Ciao!
